A $120 million Not for Profit seeks a Controller who will direct day-to-day accounting operations, billing, payroll, reporting government contracts and who is primarily responsible for timely and accurate financial reporting. This role supervises a team of 6 staff- 2 accountants, 2 payments associates, and a fiscal coordinator. Reporting to the Chief Fiscal Officer, the Controller supports in building a strong business infrastructure, effective and efficient fiscal and accounting operations.

To be successful you must be strong, decisive with excellent communication skills, a deep understanding of accounting practices and reporting compliance particular to a 501(c)(3) with a knack for implementing effective and functional systems and procedures.   • Direct, manage, coordinate, and review all accounting functions, including financial reporting, accounts receivable/billing, accounts payable, payroll, and federal/state/city reporting requirements.
  • Ensure the highest standards of integrity in financial reports, including compliance with GAAP, and regulatory requirements. Stay abreast of regulatory developments and industry best practices.
  • Under the direction of the CFO, design and produce timely and accurate financial reports for different stakeholders, including internal department managers, the board of directors and the Executive Leadership.
  • Develop, mentor, and train accounting team members to match the needs of the organization. Develop goals, conduct performance appraisals, and provide guidance and feedback.
  • Partner with the Operations Director and IT team to identify and implement technology solutions and drive towards automation.
  • Draft, implement, and maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures. Educate and monitor agency staff to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures
  • Work cross functionally with all departments to ensure senior managers have accurate information to manage their components of the business. Support other departments with financial information, including grant applications and reporting.
  • Project and manage agency cash flow, weekly, monthly.
  • Coordinate and lead all audit activities, including annual financial and contract audits, timely filing of all required returns, licenses, permits and other statutory filings.
  • Interact effectively with financial vendors, including banking services, payroll and auditors, in order to maximize use of their services.
  • Oversee the maintenance of accurate and complete financial records, including leading the conversion to a fully integrated budget reporting system and paperless accounting optimizing Accounting system.
  • In conjunction with program management and fiscal analysts, conduct cost analysis and prepare quarterly cost reports and identify cost-control measures and initiatives.

Required Knowledge and Skills


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting is a must, CPA designation is preferred
  • 5-7 years of progressively professional experience in high level accounting and financial reporting, solid experience at an organization with multiple segments and activities
  • Expert understanding of GAAP/ Uniform guidance within the non-profits 501(c)(3)environments, including restricted funds and grant accounting
  • Excellent communication skills to engage clearly and effectively with internal and external constituents, both verbally and in writing with excellent presentation skills
  • Ability to drive technology initiatives and optimization of accounting, patient and client databases, payroll and expertise in spreadsheets, graphs and tables
  • Experience in ERP implementations and working in an automated accounting environment, MIP/Abila highly desirable and electronic health records
  • Strong planning, designing and implementing financial controls and processes
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands, deadlines and priorities yet maintain positive collaborative and productive working relationships
